A 49-year-old secondary school teacher in Patras has been arrested following a complaint by an 18-year-old former student, who allegedly told police that they had been in a relationship from the time she was 14 until she was 17. A serious case involving a secondary school teacher is under investigation in Patras after police arrested a 49-year-old man following a complaint made by an 18-year-old woman, who is now a university student. According to the complaint, the woman alleges that she had a relationship with the teacher between the ages of 14 and 17. The case has now been referred to the judicial authorities, with the teacher expected to appear before a prosecutor in Patras. Teacher and private tutor According to information reported by Greek media, the 49-year-old was not only the girl’s teacher at school but also reportedly gave her private lessons at her home. The former student allegedly told police that the relationship began when she was 14 and continued for several years. She also reportedly alleged that, while she was still a minor, the teacher encouraged her to send him nude photographs and videos. Police reportedly found material relating to the complaint on the man’s mobile phone. As a result, he is also facing allegations concerning sexually abusive material involving a minor. What the teacher allegedly told police According to reports, the teacher did not deny having a relationship with the girl when questioned by police. He reportedly claimed that he was in love with her and that this was why he entered into the relationship. The allegations and the evidence gathered by police will now be examined by the judicial authorities. The case is now before the courts The 49-year-old was being held at the Police Headquarters in Patras and was expected to be taken before the prosecutor on Thursday, August 27. The case is particularly serious because the allegations concern a period during which the complainant was a minor and the accused was reportedly her teacher. At this stage, the allegations remain allegations and the investigation and judicial proceedings will determine the facts and any criminal responsibility. Presumption of innocence As with any criminal case, the arrest and allegations do not constitute a conviction.
