At the heart of this empire is a deep, dual reliance on opium\u2014both as a multi-billion dollar revenue stream and as a severe internal vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From funding regional proxy networks to managing epidemic-level addiction within its own ranks, the IRGC has become inextricably bound to the narcotics trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Borderless Cartel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran shares a porous 500-mile border with Afghanistan, the world\u2019s primary producer of illicit opium. While the Iranian state publicly executes low-level drug traffickers, the IRGC systematically monopolizes the high-level transit routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>State-Sanctioned Smuggling:<\/strong> Western intelligence agencies and geopolitical analysts have long documented how IRGC factions secure transit corridors across Iran. They facilitate the movement of Afghan opiates into Europe, the Caucasus, and the Persian Gulf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financing the &#8220;Axis of Resistance&#8221;:<\/strong> Traditional banking systems are closed to Iran due to heavy international sanctions. The black-market narcotics trade provides the IRGC with liquid, untraceable cash. Iran currently suffers from one of the highest per-capita rates of opiate addiction in the world.
